Monmouth's New Center For Civic and Social Justice

Duane Bonifer

Monmouth College is helping students better prepare for careers in social justice. Professors at the college came up with the idea to create a Center for Civic and Social Change.

Political science professor Michael Nelson says it's made up of five programs at Monmouth that all focus on creating a better world.

"So, an example, we might have a biology major who completes our Global Public Health Initiative Program and the Peace Corps Preparation Program. Then takes those experiences, certificates, and degrees - works for the Peace Corps for a couple of years on health related issues - and then persuses a graduate degree in Public Health or a medicial degree, turning that passion into a fantastic new career. So, we can see that there are a number of paths like this that we can use the center to help guide students to."

Nelson says the goal is to help students consider their role in the world and give them more opportunities.

"I think that what we're looking for is providing a place where anyone who wants to do some good in the world or wants to find a way to leave the world a little better than how they came to it, that we can provide them with some guidence about how to do that. So, it really is for all of our students."

The Center for Civic and Social Change is already guiding students who are interested in social justice. There are about 15 Monmouth College professors working with them.
