Tate Announces Retirement

Davenport School District

A long career in education will end next year. Monday night, Davenport Superintendent Art Tate notified the school board that he wants to retire in June, 2019.

Tate has led the Davenport school district since 2011, as it dealt with challenges including declining enrollment, closing schools, and state funding. And he still faces a hearing with state officials over his defiance of limits on spending by the district.

In his brief letter to the board, Dr. Tate says, "My motivation comes from the desire to progress to the next phase of my life. I have worked as a full-time professional for 58 years, and I am ready to stop while I can still enjoy life."

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
