Hundreds of Students Back On Campus At Augustana College

Mini-refrigerators, sleek shelving units, and even a pet fish were among the items moving in with incoming students at Augustana College on Thursday.

About 300 hundred volunteers helped the freshmen fill their doom rooms at Westerlan Hall in Rock Island.

Lending a helping hand was Karen Dahlstrom, the Associate Director of Admissions at Augustana. She says it's an emotional process for everyone involved.

"We work all year to recruit students, to tell Augustana's story, to encourage students to come to Augustana, so the day that they arrive is awesome. I'm actually getting choked up actually thinking about it."

Dahlstrom says this year's incoming class is the biggest yet, with about 700 first year students, and about 60 transfers.

"We have 22 countries, 24 states, and we have 237 students who are first generation students. It's a really fun and diverse class for sure."

Move-in day is just the first of several acclimation events this weekend before Augustana classes begin on Monday.
