SCC Buries Anniversary Time Capsule

Scott Community College

Scott Community College celebrated the end of the school year Wednesday, and the end of its anniversary celebration, with the burial of a time capsule.

Assistant to the president, Lysa Hegland, says it was buried near the Belmont Road entrance to the campus in Bettendorf.

"The items inside not only represent the phases of education but it also represents the development and growth of Scott Community College."

The college actually celebrated its 50th anniversary last year, but waited until this spring to bury the time capsule.

Hegland says it includes 104 items, chosen by a committee, ranging from pens and pencils and a stress ball, to college brochures, a campus map, and pictures of faculty and students.

"For instance, they tried to represent the phases of technology - how we went from cd's to flash drives to zip drives - and put those elements in there so 25 years from now someone may not even know what a cd is."

Also included is a message from current president Teresa Paper to her successor 25 years from now.

The time capsule will be unearthed in 2041 when Scott Community College turns 75.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
