Davenport Schools Consider Solar Power

Davenport School District
Proposal for Buffalo and Walcott

The Davenport School District could turn to solar power to save money on its energy bills. Last fall, solar panels were installed at two schools. And next month, the board will accept proposals for other schools.

Director of Operations, Mike Maloney, says private investors will pay for the cost of installation. And during the 20-year contract, the school district's electric bills would drop.
He says after the 20 years are up, the district would only have to pay for maintenance of the solar panels.

One investor has proposed installing solar panels at Buffalo Elementary and Walcott Intermediate schools. Between the two, the district could save $15,000 a year.

The savings could be greater depending on how the market changes in 20 years.

Along with short and long-term energy savings, Maloney says the Davenport School District would significantly reduce its carbon footprint. Right now, only Fillmore Elementary and Wood Intermediate schools use solar power.

The district will begin accepting bids for possible solar projects starting March 1st.
