The Eastern Iowa Community Colleges have reached the halfway point of their fund raising campaign for a new campus in downtown Davenport. Today officials announced pledges and gifts now total 2.8 million dollars, and they're confident they'll reach the 6 million dollar goal soon.

Chancellor Don Doucette says 5 million is earmarked for the conversion of two vacant bank buildings along 3rd Street, between Brady and Main, to replace the three separate downtown locations now used by Scott Community College.
That's part of the City Square project that includes the re-development of the other side of the block, along 2nd Street, by Restoration Saint Louis, into offices, apartments, and a hotel.

The city depends on a strong urban core, and we're happy to help develop that core.

The overall cost of the new Scott Community College urban campus will be 21 million dollars, with construction starting next spring. Completion should be in fall of 2017.

The college district also plans to convert the Kahl Building, now used for classes and offices, into apartments for students.
One million dollars of the current public campaign will be set aside for student scholarships.
