First Day Project, Annual School Supply Drive

First Day Project

Local school districts and organizations are coming together for an annual drive to collect school supplies for low-income students. Tomorrow, the First Day Project will begin for residents of the Illinois Quad Cities, to donate backpacks, pencils, paper, and other supplies.
Spokeswoman Dawn Saul says the First Day Project supports the nearly 20,000 students in Quad Cities schools, who are considered low-income. In Davenport, 68 percent of students qualify for free or reduced lunch.
Tomorrow in Illinois, postal carriers will pick up donated school supplies on their mail routes. In Iowa, collection day will be Saturday, August 8th.

Saul says if residents miss the collection days, they can donate money at several Whitey's Ice Cream locations between August 1st and 15th. And, they can choose which district their donation supports.
WQAD-TV is also accepting donations at its station in Moline, on August 5th. And, Carpetland USA in Davenport and Moline will accept donations until August 1st.
