New Early Learning Center

Scott County Family YMCA

Two organizations are working together to offer more early learning programs in the Quad Cities. Thursday afternoon, the Scott County Family YMCA and the Women's Leadership Council celebrated the opening of a new YMCA Early Learning Center in downtown Davenport.

YMCA spokesman Frank Klipsch says the new center, on East Fourth Street, will officially open Monday. And, it'll serve 150 children-- that's 50 more than the current center.
He says the 2.8 million dollar building has been in planning for three years. But, it was finally made possible when the Women's Leadership Council, a part of Quad Cities United Way, raised 2.5 million dollars.

Because of the large need for programs, Klipsch says the new center will collaborate with the current early learning programs at the YMCA on Second Street, and the Palmer Center on Harrison Street.
The new Early Learning Center has rooms divided by age group, plus an outdoor explorer playground. After Thursday's celebration, the public is invited to an open house on Sunday, from 3 to 5 pm.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
