Another Local Option Vote This Spring

When voters go to the polls this spring in Rock Island County, they'll get another chance to help raise money for school repairs and construction. That's because school boards representing more than half of the students have formally requested another vote on a local option sales tax for schools.

Regional School Superintendent Tammy Muerhoff  says the minimum number is 51 per cent, and the requests so far represent 53 per cent of the 23,700 students in the county.
As of today, she's received requests from East Moline, United Township, Rock Island, Moline, and Riverdale. And she anticipates the rest of the districts will also request another vote.
The deadline to notify the county clerk is January 20th. And if approved the one per cent sales tax would raise about 11 million dollars per year, to be divided among the ten districts.
This would be the third try in recent years - just last March the same question failed in Rock Island County 56 to 44 per cent.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
