Rate Hike Approved for Iowa-American Water

Iowa-American Water

The cost of water for residents of the Iowa Quad Cities and Clinton will go up, but not right away.

This week, the Iowa Utilities Board approved a rate hike for Iowa-American Water Company.

Board spokesman Don Tormey says no effective date has been set for the higher rates.

"So although the board did approve a rate increase, the rates won't go into effect until the board issues an order approving the revised tariff. And that revised tariff is due by Monday July 19th to the board."

In August of last year, the company requested an increase of 8.9 per cent, but the utilities board only approved an increase of 4.9 per cent.

Tormey says Iowa-American can also continue to collect a monthly surcharge (called the Qualified Infrastructure Plant rider) from customers to help pay the cost of replacing lead service lines and other repairs.

"The board encouraged Iowa American to accelerate its replacement of aging infrastructure in this order to help avoid costly emergency repairs."

The Iowa Utilities Board also allowed the company to charge customers for its pandemic-related costs, adding up to about 73,000 dollars.

Iowa American serves 53,000 customers in the Iowa Quad Cities and 10,000 in Clinton.
