when the Oscar Mayer plant was still open.

Demolition has begun at the old Oscar Mayer plant on West River Drive in Davenport. It closed two years ago after Kraft Heinz opened a new plant in the northwest part of the city.

Parts of the old plant dated back to about 1912, and the possible future use of the site has not been announced.

Construction of the new, 225 million dollar plant began in 2016, in the Eastern Iowa Industrial Center, and production began in 2017.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
