Now's a Good Time to Buy Flood Insurance

As the Mississippi River continues to drop, FEMA has a couple of reminders for flood victims and others.

Those who suffered losses from flooding from March through mid-May have a couple more weeks to register for federal disaster assistance. The deadline is July 1st. The number is 800.621.3362, or go HERE.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency also says property owners and renters should find out more about buying flood insurance, whether they were impacted by this year's flood or not.

Spokeswoman Deanna Frazier says FEMA administers the National Flood Insurance Program, but policies are sold by insurance agents.

And more than 75% of flood victims live outside flood hazard areas.

So she says it's a good idea to find out how much it costs and consider buying coverage.

There's a 30-day waiting period for new flood insurance policies to take effect. But the program's payouts for claims don't require a presidential disaster declaration. And the coverage pays for more than what FEMA may provide after a flood. More information is at flood smart dot gov.
