Ameren Promotes Scam Awareness

Ameren Illinois will bring its anti-scam, public education program to Galesburg Wednesday.

Spokeswoman Stacey Shangraw says about 25 volunteers from the company will hand out information to the utility's customers on how to avoid being a victim.

"There are several types of scammers. One could be someone impersonating an Ameren representative - whether it's over the phone, through email, or even in person. They are targeting either senior citizens, small businesses, and non-English speaking residents."

This is the second year Ameren has held scam awareness events, and besides Galeburg the company will send its volunteers to Macomb, Danville, Bloomington, O'Fallon, Edwardsville, and Marion.

The company's volunteers will contact customers in Galesburg from noon until 3 pm.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
