Remembering Richard von Maur

Von Maur

A department store chain based in the Quad Cities is mourning the loss of one of its leaders. Von Maur co-chairman Richard von Maur died Saturday - he was 86 years old.

The company says in 1957 he joined the family-owned retail business hat had been started by his grandfather, C.J. von Maur. And along with his brother Charles, he built what had been a small, downtown department store into what it is today - 33 department stores in 15 states and a chain of 37 junior retail stores, called Dry Goods.

A press release says he was also known within the company as a top-tier magician, poet, and a man of quick wit.

Arrangements are being handled by the Halligan-McCabe-DeVries (duh-VREES) Funeral Home in Davenport. A funeral service will be held Sunday (10/21/18) at 4 pm at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Davenport. No visitation has been scheduled.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
