A Concept for the Davenport Riverfront

wvik staff
Mayor Bill Gluba and Bill Handel with Handel's concept for the south end of the sky bridge.

With the former Dock restaurant about to be demolished, and the casino boat leaving soon, what might happen to the downtown Davenport riverfront ? That's the question being considered by Mayor Bill Gluba, so he called in some outside help.

The mayor asked Davenport native, and retired architect, Bill Handel, to think about the  riverfront, and come up with a suggestion the mayor could show to the city council, and potential developers who might be interested in the project.

Handel calls it "the completion of the sky bridge."
His concept would have three levels - a plaza on the ground level but still above the flood plain possibly with some sort of outdoor theater, a bar and restaurant on the second, and a balcony on top for views of the river and city.

Mayor Gluba calls this site, at the foot of Main Street, "the single most important piece of real estate in the city."

Whatever we do there has to be really good.

He emphasizes Handel's concept is just a possibility, something to get the conversation started. And it would require the participation of a private developer.

Whatever is proposed for the site eventually will have to be approved by the city's Levee Commission and the Davenport city council.
