Deere-UAW Talks Continue

With one day to go, there's still no word on negotiations affecting thousands of workers in Iowa and Illinois. The current six-year contract between Deere and Company and the United Auto Workers Union is set to expire at midnight Wednesday night.

Talks began a month ago, and at the time, the company and union said there would be no public comment except by joint press release. And since then, there's been no comment or progress report of any kind.

The negotiations affect about 10,000 hourly workers at 12 plants, including those in Davenport, Ankeny, Ottumwa, and Waterloo in Iowa, East Moline, Moline, and Milan in Illinois, and the Coffeyville Works in Kansas.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
