Genesis Health System Mandates Employee Vaccination

Genesis Health System

All employees of Genesis Health System must be vaccinated by this fall.

On Wednesday, the health system announced that November 8 is the deadline, including for medical staff, to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

Exemptions are possible for religious or medical reasons.

This follows last week's announcement by UnityPoint Health and similar decisions made by health care organizations nationwide.

Genesis Health System President and CEO, Doug Cropper, says the requirement is consistent with the existing policy requiring vaccinations against the flu, and that this serves as "an opportunity for Genesis staff to lead by example and encourage others who have not been vaccinated."

Since December, he says, less than 2.5 percent of nearly 800 patients hospitalized at Genesis with COVID-19 have been fully vaccinated.

Genesis Health System now employs more than 5,000 people in the area.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
Aaryan Balu first set foot in audio journalism at WTJU Charlottesville and WRIR Richmond, and now works as WVIK Quad Cities NPR's Fellowship Host.
