Trying to Help Homeless Veterans

Mayors in the Quad Cities will continue their efforts to help veterans. Starting this week, they'll issue proclamations in honor of the "Mayors Challenge to End Veterans Homelessness."

Since 2014, they've joined with local and national organizations that focus on housing and other services for people who are homeless. And their goal is to end veterans homelessnes in the Quad Cities by the end of next year.

Rock Island Mayor Mike Thoms was scheduled to issue the proclamation in his city Monday night, followed by Davenport Tuesday night, Moline next week, and Bettendorf next month.

A recent survey found that about 10 per cent of the homeless population in the Quad Cities are veterans.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
