Mobile Food Pantry in Rock Island

River Bend Foodbank

The River Bend Foodbank will hold its next mobile food pantry in Rock Island on Saturday.

When CEO Mike Miller joined the foodbank in 2015, he says it held mobile food pantries once or twice a month. Now, there are 10 to 15 a month across 23 Iowa and Illinois counties.

“Sometimes it happens in places where maybe there isn’t a food pantry, or the pantry capacity isn’t that big. So what we do is load up one of our trucks with about 10,000 meals and we get that out to a parking lot some place, then give them the food right off the truck.”

Miller says typically, hundreds of families in need attend and the foodbank needs 40 to 50 volunteers to make it happen.

“It’s really a beautiful site. I tell people all the time, whatever your stereotype is of hungry people, just come out and help us give away food. It really is just a beautiful picture of people helping people.”

Saturday’s mobile food pantry will stop at Second Baptist Church in Rock Island at 919 6th Avenue. Volunteers can register at www.riverbendfoodbank.org
