Flood Assistance for Rock Island County Residents

RI C EMA

Residents of Rock Island County hurt by Mississippi River flooding can get help this week. The Red Cross and the county's Emergency Management Agency will open a Flood Assistance Center in Carbon Cliff Tuesday and Wednesday.

Emergency Management Coordinator, Mindy Meyers, estimates 250 homes have been damaged, from River Drive in Moline, to Campbell's Island, Hampton, Rapids City, Port Byron, and Cordova.

"Flood getting in their homes - whether it be crawl space or basement, affecting their mechanicals. They could be out washers and dryers, furnaces have been damaged, water softeners. Things of that nature."

Michele Maki, from the Red Cross, says case workers and trained counselors will also be available.
"We understand this has been a very difficult recovery for people and we know how emotional it can be. So we have folks on hand who are willing to sit with folks if they need to, and just listen to their story and try and find them additional assistance if they're struggling."
They'll also help with paperwork, groceries, rent, and medicine.
Several local agencies will be on hand to offer help, including Project Now, the Western Illinois Area Agency on Aging, Community Health Care, and the Rock Island County Health Department. Anyone applying for assistance should bring identification to prove they live in the county.

The Flood Assistance Center in the Carbon Cliff Village Hall will be open from 10 am until 7 pm Tuesday and Wednesday.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
