Mid-Life Retirement

Tara and John-Michael Elmore take a break from sorting clothing at Dress For Success in Davenport

A couple from Oregon helped sort used clothing Wednesday in downtown Davenport. John-Michael and Tara Elmore are spending a year volunteering at nonprofit and community organizations across the U.S. Including Wednesday morning at Dress For Success.

Tara Elmore says their goal is to volunteer at least once in each state and by the end of the year, to have stopped in all 50.

"We like to do a gamut of different volunteer organizations to let people know that, whatever you're passionate about, there is going to be an organization that could use your help. So, we're trying to spread it out, if we find an organization that jumps out at us that's unique, we try to send an email and see if we can be involved".

John-Michael Elmore says Iowa is the 35th state they have volunteered in so far, for a total of 52 nonprofit organizations. They have planted trees in Louisiana to fight coastal erosion, worked at food banks, and also at wildlife centers.

They plan to conclude what she calls their "mid-life retirement" in early December and probably return to their previous jobs in early childhood education and project management for banks and credit unions.
