More soldiers and their families can now live on Arsenal Island. Friday the Army celebrated the opening of 71 new single family homes and duplexes for soldiers from First Army and the Army Sustainment Command.
Colonel Kenneth Tauke, Garrison Commander, says having homes available on the island will make it easier for soldiers and their families to live here.
"Family members in the military move every 2 to 3 years. It gives them great relief to know that they can just move here, move right into a home without having to put down deposits and do all those sorts of things. They'be be able to call up, we'll have a house prepared for them, and they can move right in like the Rothwell family did today."
And helping him cut the ribbon on the first completed home was Sergeant First Class Jonathan Rothwell, his wife, and four children.
One other family moved in Friday, and about 20 more homes will be ready in the next couple of weeks. All the new homes should be completed, and with families moved in, by September.
The total cost of the project is 47 million dollars.
