The annual winter Stand Down for Homeless Veterans will be held Thursday in Davenport.
Director Mike Malmstrom says in 2000, his group called "Bridging the Gap" began holding a Stand Down in September that lasts for several days - offering health care, hair cuts, and help from many agencies. Then several years ago, they began holding a one day event in February.
"To get those we may have missed. It's the height of the winter months, if they need a hat, glove, or coats, we have them. Plus, there are always some that are new to the area and who may have gotten on the rolls since the last time we had one."
Malmstrom says depending on the weather, the February Stand Down usually attracts between 50 and 100 homeless veterans.
It'll be held Thursday at the American Legion Hall on 35th Street in Davenport from 9 am until 3 pm. People from 25 agencies will be on hand for assistance with health care, housing, employment, and V-A benefits.
