Volunteers Help With Tax Preparations

United Way of the Quad Cities

Free tax preparation services are available during tax season.  United Way is one of many organizations that offers Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, known as VITA.

Scott Crane, President of the Quad Cities United Way, says the volunteers are certified by the IRS after completing online training.

"We have volunteers from all over the community.  We partner with AARP, but we also have folks from Credit Union, from the colleges, from non-profit agencies, from John Deere, and Lane and Waterman provides volunteers. It's a pretty significant list of organizations and individuals that participate in this."

Anyone with an annual income of 57-thousand dollars or less is eligible.  VITA helps more than 6-thousand people do their taxes each year.

"Return is about $1,500 but when they save it is on the fees and those, of course, vary but you now if you're looking at probably the low end of the fee scale, is in the $120-150 range."

You must schedule an appointment to meet with a volunteer.  A list of locations is on the United Way website.

Monmouth and Augustana colleges also offer free tax preparation.
