Warming Centers

With dangerously cold conditions predicted through the weekend, Rock Island Township has opened a warming center.

The Rock Island Township Town Hall is open during the day from 8 am to 6 pm, and is located at 2827 7th Avenue in Rock Island. Visitors are also invited to stay for an evening meal at 5:30, provided by Saint Pius Catholic Church.

Christian Care offers a warm place to spend the day, from 8 am until 6 pm. It's located at 2209 3rd Avenue in downtown Rock Island.

Also offering shelter from the frigid conditions is the Humility of Mary Shelter in Davenport - people can spend the day, and it also offers space to spend the night, at 1016 West 5th Street.

Kings Harvest in Davenport is closed during the day, but provides a night time shelter from 9 pm until 7 am - at 824 West 3rd Street.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
