Along with going to class, students at 17 area high schools will spend the next six weeks collecting food for the needy. The 32nd Annual Student Hunger Drive begins Monday night.
Executive director Liz Treiber says there is no specific goal this year.
"We've asked them to think about what they'd like to eat for dinner, and either try to buy that food with money they raise, or to get out and ask the community for those sorts of items."
Last year the students brought in more than 378,000 pounds of non-perishable food for the River Bend Foodbank in Davenport, for a total of more than 17 million pounds since the drive began.
"The most needed food items would be something that's hearty - canned meat, vegetables, soups, stews, cereals - things that a person could make a meal out of and that would sustain them for the day."
While the students raise money and collect food in their schools, local residents can help by bringing donations to Hy-Vee stores, the Lujack car dealerships, and the River Bend Foodbank.
The Student Hunger Drive will end on November 9th.
