"Memory Cafe" A Meeting Place For Those With Memory Loss

A new support group for senior citizens recently diagnosed with Alzheimer's is meant to teach them about what to expect from the disease.

The "Memory Cafe" is the newest service from the Center for Active Seniors in Davenport.

Laura Kopp is President and CEO of CASI.

"Our goal is to have speakers from outside in the community to come in and talk about what to expect from the disease -- issues they may be experiencing but maybe haven't talked about to anyone else. To have just socialization activities like food and music and drinks."

The new cafe was made possible by a $60,000 dollar capital campaign. It will be housed in CASI's senior center.

"There are currently really no services for those individuals who are very high-functioning, who have recently received their diagnosis and really don't know what next steps are or what's in store."

The Memory Cafe will meet on the second Thursday of every month. A CASI membership is not required to join.
