A wreath laying ceremony Thursday will commemorate the end of the Korean War. Members of the Quad Cities chapter of the Korean War Veterans Association will gather in the National Cemetery on Arsenal Island.
The armistice ending the war was signed on July 27th, 1953.
Chapter president, Ron Sears from Cambridge, says it's often called "the forgotten war."
"Because in 1950 when North Korea invaded South Korea, nobody knew where Korea was and nobody seemed to care."
It was also just five years after World War II had ended.
Sears joined the Illinois National Guard in 1951, and was activated and sent overseas the following year where he served in the artillery.
"I think everyone should be cognizant of the fact that the U.N. forces stopped the communist aggression in southeast Asia. And unfortunately, it hasn't been stopped completely."
Along with keeping the memory of their service, and their war, alive, Sears says the Korean veterans association raises money for veterans homes and Honor Flights.
The ceremony begins at 10 am Thursday in the National Cemetery.
