Heat Causes Pavement Problem & Places to Cool Off

A crew is working to fix part of a road that buckled due to the heat. Employees from the Rock Island County Highway Department are repairing the broken pavement in the west-bound lane of the Milan Beltway, just east of US 67 near Camden Park.

In addition, residents who don't have air conditioning have many choices about where to get out of the heat and prevent getting sick. Christian Care opens an Emergency Cooling Center when the temperature is 90 degrees and higher. It's open every day 8 am until 7 pm at Christian Care, 2209 3rd Avenue, Rock Island. That's where the organization offers free meals and operates a men's shelter. Other places to cool off include seniors centers, malls, libraries, and township halls.
