Peruvian Priest Honored by Diocese of Davenport

Diocese of Davenport

A "champion of the poor" is this year's winner of the Pacem in Terris, Peace and Freedom Award.

Wednesday night the Diocese of Davenport will honor 88 year old Father Gustavo Gutierrez who divides his time between a parish in Lima, Peru and teaching theology at the University of Notre Dame.

Each year the diocese honors someone for their work for social justice and peace. And Kent Farris, Director of Social Action, says Gutierrez is considered one of the main founders of what's called "liberation theology," thanks to his 1971 book, "A Theology of Liberation: History, Politics, and Salvation."
This is the 51st year, the Diocese of Davenport has handed out the award - past winners include Martin Luther King Junior, Dorothy Day, Mother Teresa, and Cesar Chavez.

Tonight's (wed) ceremony begins at 6:30, at Saint Ambrose University in Davenport, in Christ the King Chapel.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
