Veterans from northwestern Illinois will travel to Washington Thursday to visit the monuments that commemorate their service. The 35th Honor Flight will leave from the Quad City Airport and carry veterans from Dixon, Sterling, and Rock Falls.
One of the organizers, Steve Garrington, says many of those making the trip served during Korea and Vietnam, but only a few are veterans of World War 2.
Garrington says the veterans enjoy the flights and sight-seeing, but what's more important is that the community honor them for their service to our country.
Since 2008, Honor Flight of the Quad Cities has flown over 3,000 veterans to Washington DC. Each flight takes 90-100 veterans and 60 volunteer guardians on a one-day-trip to the nation's capital.
