Auction at QC Downs

Bloomberg Auction

One of the final chapters in the history of what used to be a major attraction in the Quad Cities will be written this weekend. Equipment and furnishings from the Quad City Downs in East Moline will be sold at auction.

The race track opened in 1973, and live racing ended 20 years later. Then the owner, Arlington International Racecourse, operated it as an off-track betting site until it closed last February.

Arlington spokesman, Howard Sudberry, says the auction will include everything from a pickup truck and forklift, to office furniture, kitchen equipment, and posters.
Bloomberg Auction will hold a preview on Saturday from noon to 2 pm, with the auction set for 11 am Sunday.

Sudberry says Arlington International has not made any decision yet on the future of the building and property.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
