McVay Sentenced

Convicted killer Timothy McVay will go to prison for up to 45 years. That was the sentence Friday for the 40 year old Rock Island man following his conviction in July for the murder of 29 year old Carrie Olson of Davenport.

Judge Michael Meersman sentenced him to 40 years for murder, and an additional 5 years for concealing her death.

He did not testify at his trial, but during today's hearing, McVay read a letter saying, "I did not kill Carrie Olson." Instead he says she was alive when he left her home in December of 2013. And that his conviction allows her killer to remain free.

During her victim impact statement, Olson's mother, Karen, called him "evil" and "demented."
And she implored the judge "to empty this world of Timothy McVay."

Before pronouncing sentence, Judge Meersman, said he believes McVay killed Olson so he could have her car, and some money, and that no one deserves to die for that.

Even though he chose less than the maximum 60 year sentence, Meersman told McVay he would likely spent at least 40 years in prison, until he was 80 years old, before even becoming eligible for parole.
