RI Library Long Range Plan

A long-range plan to modernize the Rock Island Library, and keep it within budget, is nearly complete. The first of three meetings will be held Tuesday night to update city residents, and find out what they think.

Library director, Angela Campbell, says the tentative plan now calls for closing the two branches, and adding on to the main library downtown.
Campbell says for a community of this size, the library should cover about 50,000 square feet, but the 1903 building has just 33,000, and neither of the two branches can be expanded.

She emphasizes this is a long-range plan, and it may take some time to find the money for it.

The public meetings will be held at the downtown library:
- Tuesday night at 6 pm,
- Wednesday at 10 am,
- and next Monday (9/28) at 6 pm.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
