Augustana Sorority Helping Restore Civil War Monument

Delta Chi Theta
Delta Chi Theta

A sorority at Augustana College is helping raise money to fix up a historic Quad Cities monument. The Delta Chi Theta sorority will wash cars tomorrow, to raise money for the 146-year-old Civil War monument at the Rock Island County Courthouse.

The monument has been worn down over the years, making the names unreadable.

The monument was dedicated in 1869, and bears the names of Rock Island County residents who died in the war. It's been heavily damaged by weather over time, and the life-sized Union soldier has been removed from the monument.

The Rock Island County Sheriff's Office, the Quad City Civil War Roundtable, and the Rock Island County Historical Society are working to fix the monument, but still need funding for the 100,000-dollar-project.

The sorority will host a car wash from noon to 3 pm tomorrow, in Parking Lot E on the Augustana Campus, near Centennial Hall and the football field.
