Stand Down to Host Homeless Veterans

WVIK Staff

Homeless veterans in the Quad Cities will have a place to sleep, eat, and find a job this weekend. Bridging the Gap will host its 16th Stand Down in Rock Island.

Executive Director Mike Malmstrom says the veterans can register Thursday afternoon and stay the night.

Local agencies will be on hand and offer their services for social security, health care, and legal aid.

Malmstrom says the Stand Down first began in 1987 in San Diego, after many Vietnam veterans became homeless.

Bridging the Gap's Stand Down usually hosts around 100 homeless veterans each year. The event, held at the QCCA Expo Center in Rock Island, will begin Thursday afternoon and end on Saturday.
