Niabi Zoo's Primate Family Grows

Niabi Zoo
The new Colobus monkey with her mother, Shirati.

There's a new addition to the primate family at Niabi Zoo. Today, the zoo in Coal Valley announced the birth of a Black and White Colobus monkey.

On September 1st, zoo staff discovered the baby had been born, to Shirati, a 12 year old female. This is the mother's eighth baby, and Zoo Director Marc Heinzman says some other females in the troop have begun serving as babysitters.

He says Niabi is known for having one of the most successful breeding programs for the Colobus monkey.
The baby will be on display with her mother at the African Treetops exhibit. And the zoo will announce plans for a naming contest.

Niabi Zoo will switch to its fall hours beginning September 14th, and will close for the year after November 1st.
