National Cemetery Prepares for Memorial Day

US Dept of Veterans Affairs

With Memorial Day coming up this weekend, volunteers will help put out flags in the National Cemetery on Arsenal Island.

Weather permitting, flags will be placed on 32,000 graves Thursday afternoon.
Cemetery director, Scott Lamb, says each year between 500 and 800 people show up to place the flags. And with all that help it only takes about one hour.
Volunteers will also be needed on Tuesday morning to remove the flags.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
