Work began last week to restore the outside of the Rock Island Library.
Library director, Angela Campbell, says it's not surprising that a 112 year old building needs some maintenance. And the goal is to stop water from leaking into the library, especially at ground level.
In addition, the exterior will be power-washed and sealed, and some stones replaced, plus tuck-pointing and mortar repair.

Money for the 282,000 dollar project will come from the city, and it's scheduled to be finished by the end of August. The contractor is Northwest Restoration from Seaton, Illinois.
Campbell says when she became director more than two years ago, one of her first tasks was to complete a strategic plan - and one of the plan's key goals is to insure the library is "safe, comfortable, and welcoming."
