Girl Scouts to Expand Scott County Camp

Girl Scouts of Eastern Iowa and Western Illinois

The girl scouts are expanding one of their camps to serve more girls, all year round. Saturday, the Girl Scouts of Eastern Iowa and Western Illinois will announce how much money is still needed to renovate the camp at New Liberty, Iowa.
Spokeswoman, Shelly Wells Cain, says their goal is 3-million-dollars for Phase One of the project. It includes a climate-controlled lodge, 3 cabins, and improvements to the pool house.

Cain says the project began two years ago, when the girls scouts were considering selling four camps. Volunteers convinced them to keep the camps and only change one of them, making it the "premier location" for girl scouts.

The other three camps, located in Dubuque, Des Moines, and Allamakee counties, are still being used. She says they will monitor each camp until September, and then decide whether to keep them.
Construction will begin on the camp in New Liberty this spring. And, it will open the next year.
After that, Cain says the girl scouts will raise another two-million-dollars for the next two phases of the project. It will pay for more programs at the camp, like archery and zip-lining.
The Girl Scouts of Eastern Iowa and Western Illinois council includes 38 counties in the two states.
