Church Members Carry Cross & Pray on Good Friday

As they have every Good Friday for 37 years, today members of a local church prayed and worshipped while walking with a cross from downtown Rock Island to their building on 12th Street and 42nd Avenue.

Pastor of Gloria Dei Presbyterian Church, Drew Nagle, says this morning, about 15 people participated. Another pastor accompanied the group from city hall until they reached her church on 12th Street and 12th Avenue.
He's referring to the fatal shooting of a suspect by a police officer, which happened just a block or two away from the Church of Peace.

According to a scholar the church consulted, the cross they carry is roughly the same dimensions and weight as one from Jesus' time. And the route is about the same distance he walked before his execution.
Nagle says the first year, church members dragged the large, wooden cross. But the city requested they use wheels the next year to prevent damage to sidewalks.
