Helping Homeless Veterans

WVIK Staff

Community and government agencies set up tables today in Davenport to offer their help to veterans. This year's one-day Stand Down for Homeless Veterans was held at an American Legion hall.

Mike Malmstrom is director of the group, Bridging the Gap, which organizes the Stand Down, including a 3-day event each fall.
He says "No one should be homeless, especially veterans."
Malmstrom says today at least 30 agencies participated today, offering help for medical care, mental health services, housing, legal aid, jobs, and Social Security.

The first Stand Down for Homeless Veterans in the Quad Cities was held in 2000.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
