Healthcare deadline approaches

This week is one of the busiest of the year for some local hospital employees. Unity Point Health and Genesis Health System are helping people enroll for health insurance under the Affordable Care Act. Open enrollment began in November and the deadline is this Sunday.

Laurie Zimmerman is a navigator for Genesis, that's the title given to people who provide enrollment help. She says the hospital group is sending workers to libraries across the Quad Cities to help people enroll. And those who don't sign up in time this year will face a penalty.

Pam Samuelson, Marketing and Communications Director for UnityPoint, says business has been steady since open enrollment began on November 15th.

Samuelson says UnityPoint has helped enroll more than 700 people since November and advised another 300 on different health care plans.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
