Girl Scouts Bring Christmas to At-Risk Girls

Girl Scouts

Every child deserves to have a Christmas. That's the message from local Girl Scouts, who are hosting a Christmas program for at-risk girls on Saturday, Dec. 6.

Heidi Harrell, from the Girl Scouts of Eastern Iowa and Western Illinois, says this is the fourth year they have partnered with Ganson's Neighborhood Bakery and Cafe in Rock Island. Together, they bring Christmas to over 100 girls each year.

On Saturday, girls from Kindergarten through Fifth grade will open gifts, decorate cookies, and meet Santa.

Harrell is requesting new, unwrapped gifts and cash donations. She wants to make sure every girl has a present to open.

She says girls who attend the Christmas program will be able to register for the Girl Scouts, and participate in future events with the organization.

Registration begins on Saturday at 3 pm, at the Girl Scouts Program Center in Rock Island.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
