Iowa Primary Results

A record number of Iowans voted in yesterday's primary election. Turnout according to the Secretary of State's office was 24 per cent or about 522,000 ballots cast - compared with 290,000 in the 2018 primary.

In the only statewide race, Democrats chose Theresa Greenfield to take on incumbent Republican US Senator Joni Ernst in the fall. Greenfield won with 48 per cent of the vote, with her closest competitor, Michael Franken at 25 per cent.

In the Second Congressional District, Republicans chose State Senator Mariannette-Miller Meeks to be their nominee - she won with 48 per cent of the vote, over Bobby Schilling who finished second with 36 per cent. She will take on Democrat Rita Hart in the fall.

Republicans in Iowa's First District chose State Representative Ashley Hinson to challenge first term Democrat Abby Finkenauer in the November election.

And in Scott County, turnout was below the statewide figure, but still strong at 19 per cent. Two years ago it was just 10 per cent. Also Democrats turned out in greater numbers on Tuesday than Republicans - 14,000 compared to 9,000 voters in the GOP primary.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
