Truth and justice were the themes for Kamala Harris during a campaign stop in Bettendorf . On Sunday afternoon a crowd of about 800 turned out to hear one of the many democrats competing for next year's presidential nomination.
Harris says the truth is, too many Americans cannot afford decent housing and are just one unexpected bill away from financial ruin. Justice would be a change in tax policy.
"For the family that makes less than 100,000 dollars a year - that we give that family a tax credit of up to 500 dollars a month. And in Iowa, 56 per cent of the families will benefit from that approach."
She also favors a tax credit of up to 6,000 dollars a year for anyone paying more than 30 per cent of their income for rent and utilities.
But Harris received the greatest response from the crowd for her stands on health care - a right not a privilege, that climate change is real, and on mass shootings and school safety.
"Let's speak the truth, that in America today, the U.S. Congress needs to have the backbone and courage to pass smart gun safety laws."
That would include universal background checks and an assault weapons ban.
It was Harris' second visit to Iowa since announcing her candidacy one month ago.
