Former governor Tom Vilsack is touring Iowa this weekend, hoping to support fellow democrats on Tuesday's ballot. Friday afternoon, he and his wife Christie stopped at Scott County Democratic headquarters in Davenport to give a pep talk to the many young volunteers working hard during the final weekend before the election.
Despite his many years in local, state, and national office, Vilsack says this is the most important election in his lifetime.
"So what you do in making phone calls and chasing down ballots - it is essential, it is the most important work being done in this state. There are presidents of companies, stuff being made, they're decisions being made everywhere in the Quad Cities, but no one is more important than the people right here in this room."
It's also an important election because he has grand children who live in Iowa.
"So your work is personal to me, very personal to me. I want them growing up in a great state. I want them growing up being proud of their state and country so I'm depending on you. They're 9 and 4 - their life is ahead of them, their school is ahead of them, they need someone who's going to support them and care about them."
Volunteers in the Scott County office come from Iowa, Tennessee, Oregon, and California.
Vilsack's stops Friday included Cedar Rapids, Davenport, and Burlington, followed by more pep talks Saturday in Waukee, Creston, and Council Bluffs.
