The German American Heritage Center & Museum will hold its 25th anniversary celebration on Sunday.
Executive Director Kelly Lao says after the organization formed in 1994, it purchased the "Old Standard Hotel" in 1995, and focused on restoring it.

"It turned into a beautiful building where people can come and experience that German immigrant experience that people would have seen when they first came to Davenport many years ago, and giving a place for the community to come and learn more about that culture."

Now, Lao says, it offers a rotating calendar of exhibits, workshops, concerts, lectures, and academic programming.

The celebration will feature presentations from some of its founders, guest speakers, a performance by the Davenport Zither Ensemble, and more.

"We're really looking forward to having our special visitors. Also, the mayor has proclaimed August 4th, our anniversary, as German American Day in Davenport, so we will have a reading of that proclamation that was announced at city hall last week."

The celebration is from noon to 5 p.m. this Sunday at the German American Heritage Center & Museum in downtown Davenport. The event is open to the public.
