'Talking Art' With Bill Campbell, On Upcoming Har Mar Superstar Concert
The Quad City Symphony Orchestra will perform a creative cross-over concert with the R&B/Pop vocalist Har Mar Superstar on Saturday, May 11, at the Rust Belt in East Moline. This performance is in collaboration with Moeller Nights.
William Campbell, Professor of Music at St. Ambrose University, arranged six of the songs that the QCSO chamber orchestra will perform during the high-energy third set with Har Mar Superstar. Trained as a pianist, Dr. Campbell is a prolific composer who has written scores for films, theatres, and dance troupes in addition to other concert performers.
He has composed scores for a variety of socially conscious films, most notably the documentary short Lifeboat, which was nominated for an Academy Award this year. A frequent collaborator with the QCSO, he wrote the concert premiere score, Where the River Bends, for the symphony’s 100th anniversary celebration in 2015. His extensive biography can be viewed here.
Listen here to our conversation with Bill Campbell about the creative aspect of composing music, the unique challenge that this project presented, and the balancing act of recording and composing with his academic work.
Tickets to the upcoming QCSO/Har Mar Superstar event cost $25. The Rust Belt is located at 533 12th Avenue in East Moline.
