'Talking Art' With Moline Library's Bob Conklin And Anita Mehuys

Becoming American: Our Immigration Experience is a free six-part documentary film and discussion series to be held in the Quad Cities throughout March and April of 2019. Each Tuesday from March 5 through April 9, one-hour long films will be shown covering various facets of our immigrant past followed by moderated discussion sessions.

You can view the schedule of screenings and list of topics here.

Funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities, the series will be held in 32 locations throughout the U.S. The Moline Public Library received approval to bring this important programming to the Quad Cities. Partnering community organizations include the Jewish Federation of the Quad Cities, the German American Heritage Center, the Swenson Swedish Immigration Research Center at Augustana College, the Butterworth Center, and St. Ambrose University.

The discussion sessions following each film will be moderated by Adam Kaul, Associate Professor of Anthropology, Sociology, & Social Welfare at Augustana College, and by Christopher Strunk, Associate Professor of Geography and Coordinator of Latin America Studies at Augustana.

Bob Conklin and Anita Mehuys, Adult Services Librarians at the Moline Public Library

Listen to our conversation here with Bob Conklin and Anita Mehuys, Adult Services Librarians at the Moline Public Library, about the content of this series, why a well-informed historical understanding of immigration is vitally important, and how our public libraries have evolved over time into community centers, serving as information incubators while also enhancing social connectivity and assistance.

The Moline Library has created an additional schedule of related programming to complement the film series. You can also download a program guide and access a variety of scholarly articles and additional resources here.
